Do you know how to visualise your goals? Can you see them clearly? And what do you do if you can’t see pictures? The concept of visualisation has been around for quite some time now. Its one of the most popular applications the field of sports, personal development, meditation, law of attraction etc. And for many people it gets great results. But what about those of us who can’t seem to visualise and that clear picture of what we’re striving for? Does it really work for anybody?
Imagine that you are walking up to the door of your house. What colour is your house? How many windows are on the road facing side? Notice the keys in your hand. What is on your keyring? Which hand are your keys in? Then remember how you put the keys in the lock, and unlock the door. Notice the colour and texture of the door. Now in your mind, open the door and step into your house. What is the flooring like? What colour are the walls? What details do you notice?
If you did the above, you have just visualised. Not everyone sees in pictures, but we can construct imagery in our minds.
Have you ever bought a car, and then suddenly noticed lots of the same colour, make and model on the road? Or bought a new pair of shoes and started seeing other people wearing the same ones? Or that new jacket?
This is the Reticular Activating System (RAS) at work. The reticular activating system is a diffuse network of nerve pathways in the brainstem connecting the spinal cord, cerebrum, and cerebellum, and mediating the overall level of consciousness. It brings things that are important to you to your attention immediately. And you can pre-programme it through visualisation or constructed imagery.
Your RAS is the mediator between your conscious and unconscious mind. The saying “if you can imagine it, you can achieve it” applies here. Your unconscious mind can draw on intention, emotion, remembered and constructed outcomes and bring them to your attention (some people call this manifesting). Because of how the RAS works, your behaviours, physiology, thought patterns and ideas will align to the outcome you have imagined.
If there are things you want to accomplish or attain, put in some constructed imagery as you are planning your action steps or when to do it. You’ll notice you get faster results with more ease.
